Experiments in Public Art Lecture Series: Sarah and Joseph Belknap – “In Fellowship with the Sun (and the moon)”
Join the City of Boulder for the Experiments in Public Art Lecture Series, a new program designed to spark conversations about artistic expression, public space, and the creative process. Several events in the series feature hands-on workshops that invite community members to explore their own creativity.
This installment, In Fellowship with the Sun (and the moon), is led by artist-educators Sarah and Joseph Belknap, who blend science, storytelling, and material exploration in their creative practice. The program begins with a collective observation of the sun—sunshades provided—as we reflect on the 93 million miles it takes for sunlight to reach us. A short lecture follows, covering solar myths, ancient observations, and the architecture of the human eye.
After observing the sun, participants will be guided through creating their own cyanotypes, an early photographic process that harnesses sunlight to produce vivid blue images. All materials are provided, and UV lightbulbs will be available for indoor use in case of clouds.
This is an all-ages, family-friendly workshop. Feel free to bring small personal items to include in your cyanotype prints. Don’t forget your sunscreen and comfortable clothes!
On Saturday, August 10, from 8 to 10 p.m., join us at Sunrise Amphitheater for a Full Moon Gathering. We’ll observe the moon through telescopes and create moon-inspired art together. All materials provided—bring a headlamp if you like!

About the Program
The Experiments in Public Art program transforms the city into a living laboratory, pushing the boundaries of public art. Unlike traditional commissions, this series invites artists and the community to engage in creative risk-taking, process-based exploration, and shared discovery.
Presented by the Boulder Office of Arts & Culture (a division of the City of Boulder’s Community Vitality Department) in partnership with community collaborators and hosted by the Boulder Public Library.
