Why aren’t there more movies this summer?
Like last summer, we have made the difficult decision to close the Alabama Theatre for several weeks this summer to conduct a major maintenance project. This year we will replacing the electrical switchgear that brings electricity into the Alabama Theatre direct from Alabama Power. This switchgear is original to the theatre and was installed in 1927, so it’s time for an upgrade! This project is many years in the making and will require the building to be without power for days and weeks at a time. We will be closed for several weeks mid-July through mid-August to complete the work!
Because of this work, we unfortunately are not able to present a full Summer Film Series this year. Truthfully, the summer movies are typically not a profitable event for us. Because of our limited schedule this year, we have decided to show two fan favorites to make sure that the largest group of fans gets to enjoy a movie at the Alabama. We are hopeful that by having a few well attended movies, we will be better able to achieve our mission of preserving and protecting the Alabama Theatre for years to come.
