The Memory Studies Association and the EVZ Foundation will host a joint public event – with the participation of the Czech-German Fund for the Future – as part of the 9th MSA Annual Conference, “Beyond Crises: Resilience and (In)stability”, taking place this July in Prague.
In a panel discussion, we will feature international perspectives from academia, culture and civil society on current challenges in memory culture. Looking at the German-Czech memory relations as a starting point, we will expand our conversation towards a more international perspective including artists and practitioners from the exhibition ‘Voices of Memory’.
What is the current state of German-Czech culture of remembrance? What are the challenges in civic education, e.g. in youth encounters or in memorial site work? Is there a common understanding of the National Socialist injustice/ crimes or its significance for the challenges present-day Europe is facing? How does German-Czech memory culture resonate internationally, where are there points of contact or differences to other cultural contexts of remembrance? These are among the questions we will address during this event.
Participants of the conference as well as external guests are welcome to join. No registration is necessary. Please take note that the event will be recorded and published on the EVZ Foundation's YouTube channel approximately two weeks after the event.
The discussion starts with a welcome address by Prof. Kateřina Králová Ph.D. (Head of the Research Centre for Memory Studies, Charles University & Memory Studies Association), followed by a short introduction of the exhibition ‘Voices of Memory’ by Prof. Astrid Schmetterling (Senior Lecturer in Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths, University of London) and Nikita Kadan (artist). Afterwards, we continue with the panel discussion.
Our panelists are:
• Dr. Tomáš Jelínek, Managing Directorate Czech-German Fund for the Future
• Dr. Andrea Despot, CEO of the EVZ Foundation
• Olga Bubich, memory researcher, photographer and essayist
• Mirta Kupferminc, artist, lecturer and curator
Filip Rambousek, moderator and journalist, will be moderating the discussion.
There will be a reception with finger food and drinks as well as the opportunity to visit the exhibition ‘Voices of Memory’ after the panel discussion.
