Meetings without translation: “The White Lady” by Sergei Lebedev

RU: «Белая Дама» – книга о том, как в мир приходит война. О кровавой истории Донбасса, ставшего во время Второй Мировой восточным краем Холокоста. О тех днях лета 2014 года, когда в небе над Украиной был сбит международный рейс MH17, ставший будто провозвестием, что однажды эта война затронет весь земной шар. О том, как мы не верили, что большое зло, зло масштаба ХХ века, возможно в наше время, а оно уже было рядом, уже совершалось, и грехи прошлого становились грехами настоящего.

В фокусе текста – Донбасс как место страшной экологической катастрофы, потому что из-за добычи угля в земле образуются гигантские пустоты, и она начинает проваливаться. Донбасс как место беды, потому что здесь немецкие каратели казнили евреев и сбрасывали мертвецов в угольные шахты, где они покоятся до сих пор. И Донбасс как место новой трагедии, место, где Россия напала на Украину, вступив в след давнего зла.

Сергей Лебедев (род. 1981) - писатель, журналист, поэт, автор семи книг, шести романов и сборника рассказов. Его книги переведены более чем на двадцать языков и входили в лонг и шорт-листы российских и европейских литературных премий.

В настоящее время живет в Потсдаме.

EN: “The White Lady” is a book about how war comes into the world. About the bloody history of the Donbas, which during the Second World War became the eastern border of the Holocaust. About those days during the summer of 2014, when international flight MH17 was shot down in the skies over Ukraine as if it were a harbinger that this war would one day affect the entire globe. About how we did not believe that a great evil, an evil on the scale of the twentieth century, was possible in our time. But it was already there; it was already happening, and the sins of the past became the sins of the present.

The text focuses on Donbas as a place of terrible ecological catastrophe because coal mining creates huge cavities in the earth, and it begins to collapse. Donbas was a place of horror because here, German punishers executed Jews and threw the dead corpses into the coal mines, where they still lie. And Donbas is the place of a new tragedy, the place where Russia attacked Ukraine, stepping into the wake of a long-standing evil.

Sergey Lebedev (born 1981) is a writer, journalist, poet, and author of seven books, six novels, and a collection of short stories. His works have been translated into over twenty languages and shortlisted for Russian and European literary prizes.

He currently lives in Potsdam.
