Choro is the first authentic urban Brazilian music style that has existed since the end of the XIX century. Today it can be heard on almost every continent. It is a unique mixture of European classical and salon music, underlaid with Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
Choro is also a lifestyle. Members of different communities visit each other to take part in rodas (jam sessions), which contributes to an intensive cultural and personal exchange.
The project “Chora Berlim” and the album of the same name document such an exchange: the best representatives of Rio de Janeiro's lively scene play together with chorões from Hamburg and Berlin. Most of the compositions were written by the German-Ukrainian singer and composer Rosa Morena Russa, alias Kateryna Ostrovska.
After its release in Germany, the album met with a very positive response in Europe, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Some of the tracks can now be heard at the Rodas in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Nuremberg and Fortaleza.
This evening, the compositions of the album will be presented live by a four-person no borders band, that unites chorões from different places. Our marvelous clarinet player Christian Dawid is more known in Berlin as a Klezmer musician, but he is also a great choro player: don’t miss that!

Choro ist der erste authentisch urbane Musikstil Brasiliens, der bereits seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts existiert. Heute ist er auf fast allen Kontinenten zu hören. Charakteristisch ist die einzigartige Mischung aus europäischer Klassik, Salonmusik und afro-brasilianischen Rhythmen.
Choro ist zugleich ein Lebensstil. Mitglieder verschiedener Gemeinschaften besuchen einander, um an „Rodas“ (Jam-Sessions) teilzunehmen, was zu einem intensiven kulturellen und persönlichen Austausch beiträgt.
Das Projekt „Chora Berlim“ und das gleichnamige Album dokumentieren genau einen solchen Austausch: Die besten Vertreter der lebendigen Choro-Szene aus Rio de Janeiro musizieren gemeinsam mit Chorões aus Hamburg und Berlin. Die meisten Kompositionen stammen von der deutsch-ukrainischen Sängerin und Komponistin Rosa Morena Russa, alias Kateryna Ostrovska.
Nach seiner Veröffentlichung in Deutschland stieß das Album auf äußerst positive Resonanz in Europa, Brasilien, Japan und Südkorea. Einige der Stücke sind mittlerweile regelmäßig bei Rodas in Berlin, Hamburg, Köln, Nürnberg und Fortaleza zu hören.
An diesem Abend werden die Kompositionen des Albums live von einer vierköpfigen, grenzenlosen Band präsentiert, die Chorões aus verschiedenen Regionen zusammenbringt. Unser wunderbarer Klarinettist Christian Dawid ist in Berlin eher als Klezmer-Musiker bekannt, aber er ist auch ein großartiger Choro-Spieler – verpassen Sie das nicht!
