Mike Hall with the Richard Wetherall Trio

This week we are proud to welcome top tenor saxophonist Mike Hall.

Hall’s career is as rich as it is varied. He first came to prominence as a young player with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), an experience that launched him onto the national stage and soon led to a distinguished twenty-year collaboration with the legendary Michael Garrick. During those two decades he performed on several of Garrick’s acclaimed recordings, appeared on numerous BBC national radio broadcasts, and even toured Malaysia as part of the Garrick ensemble. Hall has gone on to play with many of the great names in British jazz and is a long-standing member of the celebrated Echoes of Ellington Orchestra, known for its faithful yet electrifying reinterpretations of Duke Ellington’s music.

His work has taken him from a week-long residency at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club—Britain’s most iconic jazz venue—to appearances at the World Saxophone Congress in both Slovenia and Strasbourg with Andy Scott’s innovative Group S. He has also featured in John Dankworth and Cleo Laine’s Christmas Show, further underlining the high esteem in which he is held on the UK scene. As well as being a superb performer, Hall is also a highly respected educator: for twenty years he served as Head of Jazz Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, nurturing many of today’s leading players and cementing his influence on the next generation of British jazz talent.

At the piano will be Richard Wetherall, a versatile and imaginative player who has been a fixture on the UK jazz scene for over 25 years. He has worked with leading names such as Richard Iles, Bobby Wellins, and Mark Nightingale, and has toured worldwide with Casablanca Steps and Dominic Halpin and the Honey B’s, including a memorable appearance supporting Tony Bennett and his quartet. With his blend of rhythmic drive, harmonic subtlety and lyrical touch, Wetherall will provide the perfect foil to Hall’s commanding tenor.
