Come along for an evening filled with elegant melodies, spirited solos and the unmistakable energy of live jazz at its best as we welcome the return of the superb saxophonist Rod Mason.
Mason has long been a highly respected figure on the British jazz scene. Known for his warm, rounded tone and effortless phrasing, he is steeped in the rich tradition of classic mainstream and swing-era jazz. Over the years he has appeared with a host of leading UK bands and has built a reputation as both a commanding soloist and a deeply musical ensemble player. His performances are marked by their lyricism, clarity and sense of style, qualities which have made him a firm favourite with audiences who appreciate finely crafted, timeless jazz. Mason’s deep understanding of the jazz language shines through whether he is spinning elegant ballad lines or driving a hard-swinging blues chorus.
At the piano will be the brilliant Dan Whieldon, one of the UK’s most elegant and expressive jazz pianists. A graduate of both the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music, Whieldon has steadily become one of the most sought-after pianists of his generation. He has performed at leading jazz venues and festivals across the UK and Europe, including the Southbank Centre, Ronnie Scott’s, the London Jazz Festival and the Manchester Jazz Festival.
Whieldon is celebrated for his harmonically rich voicings, flowing lyricism and refined touch, and his playing draws inspiration from the great piano stylists such as Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Fred Hersch. His acclaimed debut album Positive Changes received glowing reviews in the national jazz press, and his long-standing trio has earned praise for its interplay and inventiveness. Alongside his trio work, he has appeared with some of Britain’s foremost jazz musicians, including Iain Dixon, Steve Waterman and Ed Jones, and has built a reputation as both a sensitive accompanist and a compelling soloist. His musical empathy and instinctive interplay will make him the ideal partner for Mason’s vibrant, expressive saxophone lines.
