From Open Mic to Paid Performances – a Half-Day Workshop
Everyone likes an open mic evening. A great opportunity to try out new material in a friendly atmosphere and watch new friends and old sing and play. Open mics organisers are also to be applauded for keeping their pub venues going at quiet nights.
For some open-micers this is perfect. Some may wondering if it’s possible to take it further, if one or more of the following statements is true to for you, maybe you should consider coming along to this workshop…

Phil Jones
Phil is a musician and music producer with 40 plus years experience of playing, working man’s clubs, pubs, folk clubs, bars theatres and festivals, most recently with his band Hatful of Rain. In addition to pursing his own musical endeavours, Phil works hard to support others, promoting small shows for emerging artists and running songwriting workshops.
The Workshop – content to include
• What do I want from my musical endeavours?
This may be question complicated by many non-musical dynamics – family, time, money etc. What would be success for me? Where would I play, how often?
• Managing my current musical commitments
These changes don’t mean that I have to finish playing open mics all together, but there will be changes. Venues don’t book musicians for paying gigs when they can be seen down the high street for free two or three times a week.
• Presenting myself to the world
Social media profiles, managing the press, websites. Getting into good habits around communication.
• What media do I need?
videos, photographs, Press kits, recordings
• Presenting myself on stage
What do the pros look and sound like. Dos and don’ts
• Making a plan of action
