Join us at The Moravian Archives Southern Province for a lecture discussing the life and legacy of Peter Oliver. Oliver was born in Virginia, and was brought by his enslaver to the Wachovia Tract when he was in 1785. Peter Oliver became a skilled artisan while enslaved to the potters of Bethabara and Salem. At the turn of the century, Oliver arranged for his freedom to be legally won, which involved traveling to Pennsylvannia. He returned to Salem later and leased a farm, married Christine Bass, and raised their children. The site of his farm is now being recognized with the Peter Oliver Pavillion and Gallery project, to create a public space to honor his legacy.
Archivist Sabrina Garity will discuss how Peter Oliver's story has been pieced together through archival records and the past historians whose work has focused on Peter Oliver, enslavement, and the Salem settlement.
