AND WE HAVE A FEATURE!!!!!!
Murgatroyd was born overseas without documentation. She arrived in Canada in the nineties, where she experienced statelessness and claimed asylum before receiving citizenship in 2014. She has primarily Egyptian and Scottish heritage, as well as British and Nigerian heritage. Her adoptive father is of British and Anishinaabe/Anicinabe descent, with ties to nations on the Robinson-Huron Treaty Territory and Treaty 1 Territory.
Murg is Autistic, and disabled with a neuromuscular condition called Myasthenia Gravis and a genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. She homeschools her three children, and they enjoy travelling and meeting the many beautiful people of Turtle Island. She works as a caregiver and is a deeply religious person in her private life.
MM primarily tells true stories, though she also branches into fiction. She is particularly drawn to telling the stories of women who don’t live conventional lives, and her writing explores themes of motherhood, poverty, drug use, transience, and the connections between groups of people.
Murgatroyd Monaghan collects cool sticks, lures neighbour-kids with KD and chicken nuggets, and always picks up hitchhikers. The aurora borealis and the caribou migration make her cry, but then again, so did that time Tim Horton’s stopped carrying Canadian Maple donuts. She likes music, graffiti, bright colours, and the sound of really aggressive water.
