Our rights are under attack. Our democracy is under siege. We’ve been here before, and we know what to do.
On July 17 from 6:00pm - 7:30PM, we honor the anniversary of the passing of civil rights hero John Lewis, not with ceremonies, but with action at the Williamsburg James City County Courthouse, located at 5201 Monticello Avenue, Williamsburg, Va. Across the country, we will take to the streets, courthouses, and community spaces to carry forward his fight for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all.
Bring a water bottle, a sign, a chair if needed, dress for the weather, and reach out if you have any questions. And spread the word!
Our rights are under attack. Our democracy is under siege. We’ve been here before, and we know what to do.
This is more than a protest, it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead, and a new front in the struggle for freedom.
Please note: a core principle behind our John Lewis Good Trouble Day actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

COMMUNITY NORMS:
Please read before attending one of our events.
One of our main objectives is to host PEACEFUL, RESPECTFUL and SAFE EVENTS. Remember, when attending a Williamsburg JCC Indivisible event, your actions represent our group, and you are expected to conform to the Community Norms. Safety is a top priority for our attendees. We wish to remind everyone that we do not react to those drivers who make it clear they do not support us by aggravating them through screaming obscenities or making certain hand gestures. We do not want to enrage them and potentially make everyone, including other drivers, less safe. It is easier to wave at everyone and say, “Have a nice day”.
At our events, please do not hold signs or otherwise promote other events that Williamsburg JCC Indivisible is not hosting. You may be placing a potential legal liability onto our group that we are NOT willing to accept.
Please do not engage in DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOURS! If you are asked to stop engaging in activities which are disrupting an event to the point people are complaining to the hosts that they are experiencing physical or emotional trauma, it is expected that you will be respectful of others and follow our Community Norms and stop those behaviours. Loud noises, such as, but not limited to, cowbells, horns, etc., are usually deployed by counter-protesters to disrupt an event, not by attendees participating in an event. If you refuse to disengage from such thoughtless behaviours, do not ruin the event for everyone else - please be kind and leave!
As with our previous events, the same rules apply. We will not engage with counter-protesters. If an issue arises, please notify one of the event organizers. At larger events, these organizers will be wearing Williamsburg JCC Indivisible T-shirts with yellow safety vests. We will not engage in any acts of violence or violation of any applicable laws or engage in civil disobedience. All actions will be peaceful. Everyone participating in this event will be required to behave lawfully to ensure the safety of event participants and will seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. We will obey the orders of authorized event marshals and law enforcement authorities. Event organizers will not be responsible for any injury or damage if any were to occur during this event. Each individual is responsible for the consequences of their actions and attends at their own risk. We will park in the Courthouse parking lot without blocking access lanes and will remove any trash that is left. We are committed to maintaining public health measures to practice safe protesting during these times. Please wear a mask and socially distance if that makes you more comfortable - weigh your own risk in attending. Follow all local safety guidelines at minimum, and any safety instructions from hosts that exceed local law.
