This in-depth, hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the magic and wonder of natural dyeing using local materials. Students will learn the basics of foraged dye plants, lichens, and mushrooms, and how to use them in practical ways to create beautiful colours on wool.
The workshop is co-facilitated by Nadine McSpadden, a proud member of the Shuswap Band (Secwépemc Nation), and Zoe McDonell, a Vancouver-based textile artist and ecologist. Nadine brings her passion for land-based learning and Indigenous pedagogy, including practices such as two-eyed seeing and the 5 R’s—respect, reciprocity, relationship, relevance, and reverence. Zoe brings over 20 years of experience in natural dyeing and a background in ecological land management with one of the Treaty 8 Nations.
Together, they offer a unique blend of Traditional Knowledge and Western science to deepen participants’ connection with the natural world.
Each student will create a small woven project, such as a bookmark or coaster, using the naturally dyed wool.
