We're extremely proud to bring "From Selfie to Self" to Evans Bay Intermediate School on Wednesday 30 July.
About the session
Adolescence is both a time of challenge and a time of change. Many parents
are challenged to guide their rangatahi (adolescents) through this time without
resorting to the parenting techniques we all found so unempowering when
they were done to us – yelling, grounding, removing privileges, silence &
ordering.
We know these parenting techniques have the potential to harm our
relationship with our rangatahi and yet during a challenge we can find
ourselves on autopilot as we open our mouths and let the words fall out.
Many of us often feel guilty for our very human reactions that happen so spontaneously and we regret our words. We know connection is what our rangatahi need. Connection is what we’d love.
Yet they often don’t tell us anything ... until it’s too late.
In this hour-long session we will have a quick look at:
● Brains 101 - what’s happening inside the adolescent brain
● The role of values - what they are and how they affect parent-rangatahi dynamics
● The basics of communication - rapport & active listening
● The drama triangle and how to flip it
All designed to get parents thinking about how they can best support their rangatahi in the challenge of self identity while ensuring self responsibility is kept front and centre. It’s a big juggling act that challenges time-poor parents, and this workshop will support you as you guide your rangatahi.
Let’s make those interactions count.
