Against the backdrop of Wellfleet Harbor, learn the history of the famous Wellfleet oyster. What makes them special and desired worldwide? Former WHS&M president and commercial oysterman Dwight Estey will provide an entertaining and informative look at an industry that is synonymous with Wellfleet.
Since the 17th century Fleetians have been able to make a living - some made fortunes - bending over to pick up oysters. For many it was “Wellfleet gold.” But it was never easy. Follow the ebb and flow of the oystering business in town from the mysterious disappearance of oysters in the late 18th century to the national prominence of Sealshipt Oysters in the early 1900’s. Hear about today’s modern oyster growers and ‘pickers’ and how they have been able to overcome challenges while the town continues to stay true to the ‘small farmer’ concept, which helps keep young families in Wellfleet.
Tickets for A Waterfront View of Wellfleet's Oyster History can be booked here.
