Soufra: A Queer Diaspora Potluck (Kitchener)

Welcome to Soufra —A newly growing table for queer and trans people of color to gather, break bread, and remember who we are through what we carry.

This is the very first of what I hope will become a regular, slow-growing, and deeply intentional space. A soft landing for queer diasporic folks — especially those of us who have lived between cultures, between languages, between names.

I’m a queer Arab person living in KW, building this space from a need I’ve long felt:a space not centered on performance, or nightlife, or institutions —but on warmth, memory, and food.

Soufra (سفرة) is the Arabic word for a table, a spread, a place of nourishment.It holds care, ritual, offering. And I believe queer BIPOC folks deserve tables of our own.

This gathering is for queer and trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QT-BIPOC).We especially welcome folks from Afro, SWANA, Caribbean, South Asian, East Asian, and other diasporic communities.

If you’ve ever longed for a queer space where you could bring your whole self, your cultural food, your softness and your story — you are welcome here.

You’re invited to bring a dish from your culture, your childhood, or your memory.There is no “perfect” dish, no performance. Just food that carries feeling.And if you feel moved to, you can share a small story behind it.

There will be space to eat, connect, and rest.This is a small and cozy potluck, not a public party. It’s a beginning. It’s a table being set.

Our Instagram is still being set up — this is our first gathering — so thank you for your patience. Once we connect, we’ll share the private location and more event details. Event location will be provided closer to the event date as this is still a work in progress.

We gather. We feed. We remember.And we do it slowly, with intention, and with each other.
