Info: In eighteenth-century America, genealogy was more than a simple record of family ties-family connections wielded significant influence across governmental, legal, religious, cultural, and social spheres. In the American context, these ties also defined the boundaries of slavery and freedom, with a child's status often determined by their mother, despite the prevailing patriarchy. And even as the American Revolution transformed society, the significance of genealogy endured. The legacy of lineage from the colonial period continued to shape the early United States, underscoring the enduring importance of family connection.
Info: Introduction to the African heritage people who lived, worked, worshiped and eventually died in Colonial Newport.
Info: Lunch buffet will begin at 12 pm. During lunch, John Tew, Recording Secretary for the Rhode Island Genealogical Society, will present a short history of RIGS.
RIGS Preservation Grants recipients and our Writing Award winner will be presented.
*This part of the program will not be recorded or shown on the lifestream.*
Info: The Snowtown neighborhood once stood along the North side of the Providence Cove. This mixed-race, low-income community was a diverse place of laborers and boarding-houses, entrepreneurs and immigrants. It was also the first major instance of “redevelopment” in Providence, one of many communities leveled for something else. Snowtown is often remembered as a site of disorder...if it is remembered at all. But for many people, for about a century...it was home. The Snowtown Research Team has brought together an interdisciplinary group of researchers to reconstruct this place. Join team leader Traci Picard for a tour through the sources, methods and tools the team has used to do the work. We will look at archival documents like maps, probate records, writs and warrants as well as archaeological artifacts, all of which combine to create social histories of people often discarded from the historical record.
Info: Tens of millions of people are descended from this small group who crossed the ocean in 1620 on the Mayflower. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants publishes a series of 44 books called the Mayflower Families Silver Books, a compilation of colonial scholarship. This presentation covers the history of the Silver Books project and provides you with the tools and knowledge to effectively use them in your genealogy work, particularly for researching the colonial period. These books trace early colonial settlers through multiple generations, offering a treasure trove of genealogy scholarship. Whether you're a seasoned genealogist or just starting, this presentation will equip you to unlock the full potential of the Silver Books, revealing lineages enriched by meticulous research and documented with original records and sources.
