About the Teacher: David is the owner of Second Spring Farm in Purcellville, VA. They own and operate a three-acre sustainable vegetable CSA farm, which over the last 10 years has shifted from farmers markets, to wholesale, to a 200-member CSA. David likes math, science, engineering, and figuring out how to build systems & solve problems to make things work. For them, growing crops and running a business is an endless opportunity for this sort of problem-solving, and a way to live with their neighbors in the wider rural community of people all engaged in a similar agricultural effort.
About the Farm: Potomac Vegetable Farms has been growing and selling delicious and nutritious vegetables for over 50 years. They steward their land using organic practices, forgoing certification, and calling themselves Ecoganic. As stewards of the land, their job is to make this land better than they found it. They make our own rich compost at their Purcellville location, and apply rock powders, natural minerals and sea products to ensure that their food is nutrient dense. They use winter cover crops and summer green manure crops religiously to keep their soil microbes happy and healthy. They sell all of their produce through our two roadside stands, their CSA, and at the farmers markets they attend.
**This Field Day is based on work that is supported by the Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities Lab at American University and Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.
