About the event

Children's Love Bugs Critters and Creatures - North Carolina Pottery Making Class with Jean Skipper
Kids just want to make Pottery, and this Class with Jean Skipper is a great place for them to start! The memories and the hand built pottery pieces that they create are sure to be as unique as they are, and they make great gifts too.

School Aged Children are invited to join Jean for a morning of Hand Building Pottery Critters and Creatures. Class is from 9:30 until 11:30 on Saturday, July 12th.

Class size is limited to allow for maximum attention for each child.

For those enrolling in this class series multiple times, the possibilities for creating in each of these forms is limitless, and Jean will work with your Children to ensure that they'll continue to build skills while creating in new and different ways each time that they join her in class.

Class Outline:

Take out tour keep rest
We'll begin with an emphasis best practices for safety, the keys to success in pottery making, and some pitfals to avoid.
Guests will learn about the safe operation of our tools and equipment, and they'll also learn about the clay and glazes that we use at ARTworks Vass.
They'll practice handling and texturing clay.
They'll learn how Jean makes her Signature Critters and Creatures from a pinch pot form, and they'll create 2 Mini Love Bugs and 1 Medium Sized Critter or Creature of their choice.

After Class

Student work will be dried thoroughly, and fired in our kiln. After about 2-3 weeks, depending on the humidity level and the time it takes for the pottery to dry before being fired, it will be ready to glaze.

Glazing

Decorating is fun!
We'll text you when your children's work is ready to be glazed, and you may join us in the studio at any time during regular business hours to do so.
ARTworks Vass is open Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 until 5:30, and we ask that all glazing begin by 4:00 daily.
We're also open for an after-hours Free Open Studio on the second Wednesday of each month, from 4:00 until 7:00, and you may join us to glaze during these events too.

After Glazing

Freshly glazed pieces will be dried thoroughly and kiln fired one more time.
Work will generally be ready to pick up about 2 weeks after glazing.

Prefer Not to Glaze?

Prefer not to glaze? At this point you may also opt for your children to paint their pieces to finish them.
You may do this at home with your own acrylic paints, or in our studio during the hours stated above.
The advantage of this is that the work will be finished when painting is done and a spray sealer is applied.
The disadvantage? Work will be slightly less sturdy, and it will be porous and not food safe.

The all inclusive price for this class is $39 per child.

We define "School Aged Children" as rising 2nd through 8th graders. If you feel that your Children may have an easier time with you creating beside them as a registered student in class, please register for an additional seat in order to make with them. If you have any doubt as to whether this class would be a good fit for your Children or you, please text Jean personally before registering at 910-528-1109.

Please know that your Children's safety is more important to us than any amount of money, and this is reflected in the seriousness with which we take pottery studio cleanliness and safety.

Many of the risks involved in making pottery can be minimized by establishing a clean studio practice, and we'll focus on this at every step of our process. This will be emphasized repeatedly during classes, and your children will be expected to leave their workspaces and tools as clean as they found them.

Pottery making tools can be sharp or hot, and the equipment that we use can inflict serious bodily harm if not used purposefully and safely. In-depth training and verbal instruction about this will be provided before Children are permitted to use these items themselves.

We have a zero-tolerance policy for Guests who break our safety rules. While we don't anticipate challenges during this class, we want you to be aware that Children who break these rules will immediately be asked to stop participating in the class session. Depending on the severity of what they've done, they may also be banned from attending future classes in this series. In the unlikely event that this happens, no refunds will be provided.
