Have you wanted to write poetry but never dared to try? Are you merely poetry curious? Or maybe you've been writing poetry since you were a teenager, but only share it occasionally with a friend or two? Have you been writing in secret but would like to share your writing with like minded people in a supportive environment? Have you published poetry or participated in poetry slams? Have you never written a poem, but like listening to poems?
I am hosting a monthly poetry workshop at The Pleasant called You're a Poet and You Know it! It's intended for everyone. The first one is Wednesday, August 20th at 7 pm hosted by our venue sponsor The Pleasant ( 2434). The goal is to simply provide a space for people to connect through a shared love for poetry in a supportive and inspiring environment.
The format is simple. I start by reading some of my poetry and/or favorite poems by poets I love. After each poem people can share their reactions to the poem. How did it make you feel? Did it remind you of a moment in your life? Was there a particular line that struck you? What we don't do is dissect poems technically or critique them. There are tons of workshops and creative writing programs that use that process for engaging with poetry. This workshop is meant to be different. It's about opening our hearts to the magic of words. Important note here, after we get some regulars people can take turns bringing in their favorite poems to start the workshop. Also, when I read my poems I'll be happy to answer questions about my writing process.
After we read and talk about poetry I'll give a writing prompt and everyone can write for 20 minutes. You can write a free verse poem, a rhyming poem, a prose poem, lyrics for a song, automatic writing--anything and everything is game, all I ask is that you use the writing prompt.
After the writing session everyone will be given a chance to read their poem to the group. If you don't want to read that is totally cool. Hell, if you don't want to write and just come to listen that is awesome as well. There is no pressure of any kind. I just want you to come and engage with poetry however you wish.
Entry is by donation. Pay what you can. There is a suggested amount but if you can't afford that put whatever you want in the jug! Also, we ask folks to come prepared to support our fantastic venue sponsor The Pleasant by purchasing some their lovely snacks and beverages.
I'd also like to thank our poetry sponsor subTerrain Magazine. They designed our social media graphics--Thank you Derek von Essen! At some of the workshops they'll offer free back issues of the magazine and possibly other goodies! Also, a shout out to Laydee Ra for suggesting the name of the workshop. I think someone else might have also suggested it as well, but I couldn't find who it was in my comments-- so thank you as well! A big thank you to Susan Cormier for connecting me with you The Pleasant and for being so encouraging and supportive!
