Taiwanese-Canadian artist Edward Fu-Chen Juan presents artworks from his recent exhibition at the SUHO Paper Memorial Museum in Taipei. These beautiful illuminated scrolls were created with paper Ed hand-made from Taiwanese gampi and abaca palm blended with cottonwood fibres collected in the Kootenay region of B.C. The images of buildings were printed with copper etching and aquatint, with human figures silkscreened on top.
Ed will discuss his personal family connections and research on the history of the authoritarian Taiwanese regime and the impact it has had on the Taiwanese Canadian community and in present day Taiwan as a democratized nation. Ed will elaborate on the challenges of Taiwan’s Truth and Reconciliation towards Transitional Justice today and how it relates to similar issues in Canada. He will also discuss the importance of the Human Rights movement and how he integrates this into his art practice as an homage to his ancestors and elders.
Ed will bring other examples of handmade papers he inked and dyed with plants he grew specifically for use in printmaking, and he’ll conduct a simple Taiwanese tea ceremony with high mountain oolong tea from the Yushan steppes, served with light and delightful snacks.

About the artist:
I identify as a queer Taiwanese Canadian visual artist primarily working in printmaking and papermaking. Presently, my ongoing project combines techniques such as copper plate etching, aquatint, silkscreen, and chine-collé. Since 2023, I have been researching the impact of the human rights movement in the Taiwanese Canadian community. The work involves collecting oral histories, portrait sketches, and photo-documenting places in Canada and Taiwan. My intention is to experiment and create work that highlights the democratic discourses and challenges between Taiwan and its Western counterparts.
Presently I live and work in Vancouver, BC. or the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I am a Taiwanese person with ethnic roots to the Hakka and the Plains First Nations People of Taiwan.
