Are you 16-19 years old and love to draw?
Join MUŻA for a unique 7-week ‘Sketchbook Series’ where you’ll explore drawing techniques and materials used by old masters.
Programme:
Week 1: A Sketch a Day – 26th July – 10.00am – 12.00pm: Start with a tour of MUŻA, meet fellow participants, and get introduced to the Sketchbook Project. Discover the materials you’ll use, explore what makes a drawing, and begin your first pencil-based observational study.
Week 2: Idea Development – 2nd August – 10.00am – 12.00pm: In this session, participants will explore creative idea generation through playful, hands-on methods. They’ll dive into visual research techniques and begin shaping the themes for their drawings in the weeks ahead.
Week 3: Make your mark – 9th August – 10.00am – 12.00pm: This session focuses on the versatile properties of ink, from bold, composition-defining marks to precise, controlled lines. Participants will also explore how different tools influence mark-making and texture.
Week 4: Bone and Metal – 23rd August – 10:00am – 12.00pm: In this session, participants will have the opportunity to view metal-point drawings up close, then try the technique themselves in a guided study. The focus will be on creating depth and value through line.
Week 5: The Grand Tour – 30th August – 10.00am – 12.00pm: This session will explore the pivotal role of watercolour in 18th and 19th-century travel documentation, with a focus on capturing Maltese landscapes, seascapes, or cityscapes in sketchbooks. Emphasizing rapid observational techniques, this session fosters the concept of drawing as a method of recording, drawing inspiration from historical travel sketchbooks.
Week 6: From creating to co-curating – 6th September – 10.00am – 12.00pm: During week 6, participants will engage in the basic curatorial practices, selecting and preparing their artworks for exhibition. This session delves into the principles of exhibition design, thematic cohesion, and the logistics of display.
Week 7: Share your work – 13th September – 6.00pm: Week 7 will be dedicated to the opening of the exhibition, where participants will be hosting their guests and sharing their creative journey with others.
Exhibition set-up will be carried out between the 8th and the 13th of September, with the exhibition running between the 14th and the 26th of September 2025.
How to apply: In approximately 100-150 words, tell us why you’re interested in participating in these sessions. What excites you most about the course, and what do you hope to gain from the experience? Please include three photos of artworks from your portfolio with your letter.
