Learn about cemetery preservation!
Dawn Cobb, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and John Heider, professional gravestone conservator, will teach participants how to care for Illinois cemeteries and their historic grave markers properly. There will be a classroom session in the morning (9-noon) in the Archives. The afternoon session (1-3:30) will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery for a hands-on workshop for learning cemetery care, basic gravestone maintenance, and simple repair. Gain valuable knowledge for documenting a cemetery, safe cleaning practices, probing, repairing, and resetting certain grave markers.
Due to space capacity limits, the morning session in the classroom has a registration limit of 20 attendees, and the afternoon session at the cemetery has a registration limit of 12 attendees.
Separate registration for both the morning and afternoon sessions is required to attend both.
