Matariki Puanga - Raranga / Weaving Workshop

Participants will learn the art of raranga (weaving), with a focus on harakeke (flax), a taonga (treasured) plant in Māori culture. Harakeke is more than a material—it is a living entity with whakapapa, used traditionally not only for weaving but also for healing. Elders and local weavers will share kōrero (stories) about the tikanga (customs) of harvesting and the significance of harakeke in spiritual and physical wellbeing.

Serving of Hāngi:
Limit of 30 people per workshop. Registration is essential. Hāngi will be served to those who have registered. Registration is based on a first come first served basis.

From 17–27 June, the tukutuku panel created during the workshops will be on display at Upper Hutt Central Library—offering the community an opportunity to add their own thread to the tapestry that shapes and strengthens our shared story. We warmly encourage everyone to come, engage, and enjoy this unique cultural experience.
