About the event

The Subtle Body: An Interoceptive Map of Central Nervous System Function
Explore the transformative power of meditation on the subtle body in this unique retreat, guided by the pioneering research of Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Joseph J. Loizzo. Blending ancient contemplative practices with cutting-edge neuroscience, this experience offers a profound journey into the mind–body connection. The subtle body, a concept found across cultures and throughout history, offers an alternative to mainstream views of the psyche, which often frame it as either a disembodied mind or a mindless brain.

Rooted in the Buddhist Tantric tradition from ancient India and preserved in Tibetan teachings, the subtle body is often described as a mystical spiritual essence. In this session, it is revealed as an embodied neural network linking the physical body–mind to the most refined layers of neurochemical energy, genetic information, and lucid intuition, the quantum foundation from which all embodied minds and their environments arise. We will begin by exploring the subtle body’s structure and function in daily life, then map contemplative processes that access and direct its energies. These practices can transform a trauma-bound body–mind into a fully awakened, liberated embodiment of clarity, compassion, and bliss.

During the retreat, we will also examine the subtle body model, or chakra system, a time-honoured map of central nervous system function that has shaped traditional Indian and Tibetan medicine for centuries. Together, we will discover how this ancient framework aligns with, and at times challenges, contemporary models of neuroscience.

This retreat is ideal for those wishing to integrate the wisdom of ancient traditions with modern scientific insights. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of meditation’s effects on both mind and subtle body, explore the mechanisms behind mindfulness, and learn practical, embodied tools — including innovative neurofeedback techniques — to enrich meditation practice and strengthen the connection to the subtle body.
