30th Anniversary Screening!
Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Kevin Smith’s slacker classic, with a live performance by the original verbal nerdsmith WORDBURGLAR! PLUS a Comic Book Creator Corner with comic books, art, music, merch and Surprise Guests!
It’s the perfect nerdy music-on-film fan pre-party for the View Askew faithful - on the eve of Canada’s biggest geek convention! Featuring the movie that Stompbox curator David Bertrand has watched more times than any movie ever made ever (sadly, true!)! Pre-show audiences will be treated to Wordburglar’s humorously nerdy wordplay and storytelling hip-hop, a kinetic complement to the 90s pop-culture time capsule of MALLRATS!
Kevin Smith followed up his landmark debut CLERKS and made the Askewniverse a thing with this total classic or complete misfire depending on who you ask. Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee, absolutely on fire) and T.S. Quint (Jeremy London, visibly stoned and lost) are two hopeless layabout “mallrats” at risk of losing their respective partners, Rene (the great Shannen Doherty) and Brandi (Claire Forlani). Eventually they concoct an elaborate scheme of girlfriend redemption plus revenge on jerk clothing store manager Shannon Hamilton (Ben Affleck), by manipulating their way onto Brandi’s dad’s (scary Michael Rooker) dating game show being filmed live at their local mall where all grievances will be aired in front of a live audience!
Along the way we get Jay and Silent Bob shenanigans, the mall Easter Bunny gets beat up, a kid gets stuck in an escalator, and the boys get dropped some knowledge from 2 gurus - a topless three-nippled fortune teller (Three’s Company’s Priscilla Barnes) and Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee - who’s worried about Brodie’s obsession with superhero genitals.
Endlessly quotable! “When the hell do I get to see the goddamn sailboat??!”
