"My mother told me never to do this"
Join Neon Dreams for a bone-chilling road trip that drags you through hell via the dusty highways and beaten-down locales of the American Southwest. Hauntingly sinister and intoxicatingly surreal, The Hitcher is a cat-and-mouse thriller that plays like an American odyssey conjured up by a fever-induced nightmare.
C. Thomas Howell stars as "Jim Halsey", a young man on the job delivering a car from Chicago to San Diego. Bored and lonely, he makes a fatal error in judgement one rainy night by picking up a hitchhiker "John Ryder" — a legendarily demonic performance from Rutger Hauer. What follows is a pulse-pounding thrill ride as Ryder sadistically stalks and toys with Halsey, pulling him closer and closer towards a metaphorical/philosophical dark side.
The debut feature from director Robert Harmon (Nowhere to Run) and screenwriter Eric Red (Near Dark, Blue Steel), who, at 20 years old, pitched his script by saying: “It grabs you by the guts and does not let go. When you read it, you will not sleep for a week. When the movie is made, the country will not sleep for a week."
Featuring unforgettable supporting roles from Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jeffrey DeMunn, a menacing score by Mark Isham, and eye-popping cinematography from John Seale, The Hitcher is a sensory assault not for the faint of heart. For fans of nail-biting intensity in the vein of William Friedkin's Sorcerer, this is a theatrical experience not to be missed.
This screening and others are made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsor Hollywood Suite.
