About the event

Longing and Belonging: Mixed Media Collage Workshop with Aaron Jones
Longing and Belonging: Mixed Media Collage Workshop with Aaron Jones

Join artist Aaron Jones for a hands-on, reflective workshop that explores the layered nature of identity through the medium of mixed media collage. Inspired by the themes of Rosalie Favell | Belonging (1982–2024), this workshop invites participants to explore the complexity of self-representation and their sense of belonging.

Participants are encouraged to bring personal materials—such as photographs, letters, printed clippings, found objects, and other memorabilia—that reflect the histories, memories, people, icons, and images that have shaped who they are. Additional materials will also be provided.

In the spirit of Favell’s work, where photographs become sites of storytelling, resistance, and reclamation, this workshop encourages participants to assemble a visual statement of identity through collage. The creative journey will be a process of reimagining the self across time, space, and cultural narratives.

This 3-hour workshop is designed to support honest, creative expression and to provide a space for exploring how identity is layered, shifting, and complex. Whether drawing from personal archives, pop culture, imagined worlds, or abstract ideas, participants will piece together symbols of self, longing, and belonging.

About Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones creates objects, images and videos that explore identity, futurity, nature, and spirit. As an artist, he draws from personal and collective memory to build layered compositions that reflect on the textures of lived experience. His practice, rooted in storytelling, is often described as a meditative process—a way of seeking clarity and peace. Jones has exhibited widely across Canada and the U.S., including at The Polygon Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, MOCA Toronto, and Mercer Union. His 2020 solo exhibition Closed Fist, Open Palm at Zalucky Contemporary was awarded The Gattuso Prize. Jones holds a BFA in Photography from OCAD University (2018) and was 1 of 100 artists selected for Vitamin C+: Collage in Contemporary Art (Phaidon, 2023). His work is held in the collections of the AGO, Royal Bank of Canada, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and numerous private
