Tod Browning's supernatural horror trailblazer!
Bela Lugosi’s definitive performance as Count Dracula, the urbane Transylvanian vampire who bends naive Londoners to his will, is just one of the reasons to see Tod Browning’s Dracula—the first English language production of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. It’s a masterwork of atmosphere. Shot by Karl Freund (Metropolis), one of the most celebrated cinematographers of German expressionism, the 1931 version introduces Dracula’s oft-imitated settings (like his Gothic subterranean lair), conceptualized by Universal Pictures supervising art director (and longtime Chaplin collaborator) Charles D. Hall. The vampire’s subtle but enduring styling itself is by pioneering make-up artist Jack Pierce, who created many of cinema history’s most striking creatures and memorable monsters.
Dracula is also haute horror in a genre that has linked fantastic, aestheticized violence with high style since the birth of Hollywood. Bela Lugosi was buried in his iconic character costume—including the dramatic black opera cloak— and no wonder! Count Dracula’s dapper tailoring embody the deceptive urbanity that hide his bloodlust. As his intended victim Mina, Helen Chandler’s pale, frothy boudoir frocks (by Universal costume designers Ed Ware and Vera West) emphasize her vulnerable femininity, while referencing the ghostly Gothic painting that is a perennial visual influence on the genre.
