Join Lost Rivers on Sunday, May 18th, at 2 pm to walk Walmsley Brook through Leaside and Thorncliffe Park.
Walmsley Brook is a buried river in east midtown that joins the Don River in ET Seton Park. It was a little over 6 km and had two tributaries, Elvina Stream and Northlea Stream.
We will look for remaining clues of Walmsley Brook, such as the wide valley in Howard Talbot Park, the bend in Roehampton Ave and explore the streets around Northlea Stream that were underwater due to flooding in 1948.
Much of Leaside was once covered by a shallow bay 12,000 years ago, which we will imagine from the shoreline of Lake Iroquois which runs north-south through the neighbourhood. Walmsley Brook comes into full view in Thorncliffe Park which we will see from Beth Nealson Drive and adjacent green space.
Meet at Charlotte Maher Park (550 Roehampton Ave) at the corner of Roehampton Ave and Bruce Park Ave, which is one block north of Eglinton Ave.The start location is served by numerous bus lines (34, 51, 54, 56).
Walk is approximately 3.5 km long and there are two Tim Hortons we will pass for washrooms.
Walk leader: Rene Fan
End of walk is at Beth Nelson Drive, which is serviced by bus 88A, and there are more bus routes a short walk away on Overlead Boulevard (25, 72, 100).
Mostly accessible as we will be walking on paved surfaces except for grassy lawn at Howard Talbot Park and at the end of walk.
Rain or shine
