About the event

Being Black on King Walking Tour

Discover the Black history that spans King Street East: from the first Underground Railroad site excavated in Canada to one of Toronto's first soul food restaurants whose name design and atmosphere surfaced the history of slavery in the US and Canada while also celebrating the community leaders who risked everything to ensure freedom.


This tour was developed and will be led by Faith Ebanks. Faith is an Emerging Historian and art historian whose research focuses on the history of slavery and colonialism throughout the Atlantic World from the 16th to the 21st century. She recently obtained her Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Art History from the University of Toronto where she has been pursuing her Master’s in History.


Start Point: Inglenook Community School (19 Sackville Street)

Our staff and volunteers will be at the tour's starting location 30 minutes prior to each tour. Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the tour to allow time for check in. Feel free to call us at (647) 542-3450 if you are having trouble finding the start location.


End Point: 30 Adelaide Street East


Length of Tour: Approximately 90 minutes


Distance and Terrain: This tour is approximately 2.0 kilometers in distance and takes place predominantly on paved city sidewalks and streets. There are some unpaved portions of the route that take place in city parks.


Ticket Price and Registration: This tour is provided for $8.00/person. The total cost is $9.85 (includes a $1.85 transaction fee). Please note that space is limited on our tours. You may not be able to join a tour group if you have not registered ahead of time.


This tour uses individual audio headsets. All registered participants will be provided with an individual headset that will allow you to hear the tour guide throughout the tour.
