Evergy’s continued spending on its clunker coal plants will hike your bills yet again!
Evergy CEOs are asking for another rate increase, this time for $196 million! Even when Evergy profited ~$878 million in earnings last year, the monopoly utility is asking us (Evergy Central KS customers) to pay $13.05 more per month (or an8.62% increase), while they ask for a 10.5% return on equity.
Evergy’s ongoing spending on its high-maintenance, aging coal plants burning costly, polluting coal is partly why they want to up your rates! This rate hike does NOT include the hefty cost of the proposed two new fracked-gas plants ($1.5 Billion each, before tariffs) that Evergy wants its ratepayers to start paying for right now. These methane-burning gas plants are being built upon speculation for large data centers that may or may not come to Kansas. FYI - Data Centers employ very few people & consume massive amounts of electricity & water (we’re talking about up to millions of gallons of water use per day)!
We have a choice: Kansas could keep pouring money into clunker coal plants & make a gamble on fracked gas, OR we can invest in smarter, Kansas-based clean energy options (like storage, solar, wind, energy conservation, transmission upgrades, & even hydrogen) to meet our future energy needs, while also helping to lower bills, create jobs, conserve water, reduce pollution, improve health, & benefit climate!
Tell the KCC which choice you prefer! Kansans deserve better than Evergy doubling down on expensive & polluting fossil fuels!
The KCC has scheduled two public hearings to give Evergy Central customers the opportunity to learn about the proposal, ask questions, and make public comments before the Commission.
Attendees may participate in person or virtually via Zoom.
Those participating virtually by Zoom can ask questions and comment, but you must register by NOON the day prior to the hearing using the registration links found on the KCC website: kcc.ks.gov/your-opinion-matters
