Artist Talk: The Artist’s New Tools: Art, Code & Generative Systems

A conversation with Casey REAS, Sam Spratt, and Dejha Ti about how they work with code, generative systems, and AI to create their work. In this panel discussion, these artists whose work is featured in the exhibition Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms will join TMA’s director, Dr. Adam Levine, for an in-depth look at their processes and practices.

Dive into the fascinating world of generative art, where the artist creates a visual system (effectively, instructions) that may produce a near-infinite number of combinations. While artists have used mathematical principles and rule-based systems to create their work for centuries, today’s digital artists use code as their paintbrush and the computer as their collaborator to explore new aesthetic possibilities.

In this panel, we’ll explore: What is generative art? How do artists use generative systems to create their work? Is generative art the same thing as artificial intelligence? What are the unique affordances of working with generative systems?

Located in the Great Gallery for onsite participants or Zoom for remote viewing. This conversation will be moderated by Dr. Adam M. Levine, Edward Drummond and Florence Scott Libbey President, Director, and CEO of the Toledo Museum of Art.
