WHAT: Reclaiming the Sky Presentation on 9/11’s Aviation Heroes

Tampa Int’l Airport will host a presentation on “Reclaiming the Sky,” a resiliency project to give today’s aviation workers a chance to explore resiliency lessons from the example of 9/11’s aviation's heroes.


The project, which is led by the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University in partnership with Airports Council Int'l - NA, and sponsored by SSP America, profiles front line airport and airline employees in Boston, New York and Washington, DC who “rose up” on 9/11 and worked tirelessly in the days, weeks and months that followed to get their airports operating again and “reclaim” hope for themselves and their colleagues.


The invitation to attend is open to all employees at TPA. Because of space limitations, however, registrations will be capped at 40. So apply early to reserve a spot!


The goal of the project is to keep the memory of 9/11’s heroes alive while giving today’s aviation employees a chance to learn the stories of the industry's heroes (many of today's workers were not born on 9/11 or were very young) and explore ways to apply the lessons to meet challenges they face in their lives.


All who attend the session will receive a FREE signed copy of “Reclaiming the Sky: 9/11 and the Untold Stories of the Men and Women Who Kept America Flying,” by Tom Murphy. Tom is also the Director of the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham and will lead the presentation. The book raises funds to support the Flight Attendant charities at American Airlines (WINGS,) and United Airlines (CAUSE) - details can be found at .


In addition to the presentation, Tom will talk about a project the Human Resiliency Institute is conducting in 2025 in partnership with ACI-NA – also sponsored by SSP America – to offer a “Reclaiming the Sky” essay competition for Young Professionals. The competition will give Young Professionals, those 40 years of age and under working at ACI-NA member airports and service companies, a chance to express lessons they learn from the heroes as they prepare to become tomorrow’s aviation leaders. The essay competition will run through the summer and culminate in presentation of awards at ACI-NA's annual conference in October in Toronto.


Eric Caplan, Sustainability and Resilience Program Director at TPA, won the ACI-NA/Reclaiming the Sky essay competition last year. Eric will be a featured speaker at the May 27 Presentation to talk about what he learned and how he's been applying the lessons.
