Marie Antoinette was a teenager, the youngest daughter of the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa, thrilled to experience the wide world, when she was sent away from her home in Austria to be wed to Louis XVI, the sheltered and weak-willed heir to the throne of France. Married at fourteen, queen at eighteen, she was deposed at 34 along with the rest of the French royal family and executed by guillotine at 37. And that’s when the stories started.
Long cast as a villain of history for her famous (and likely fabricated) statement that if the people of France are hungry and too poor to buy bread — “let them eat cake” — Sofia Coppola’s film re-examines Marie in a new light. Rather than the final straw before the French Revolution and the figure whose execution was the turning point of the Reign of Terror, here she is a charming if naïve young woman who falls into a life entirely unlike the one for which she had been (poorly) prepared. Surrounded by an eclectic all-star cast (Jason Schwartzman, Rip Torn, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, Molly Shannon, Steve Coogan, Jamie Dornan, Tom Hardy and more), Kirsten Dunst plays Marie as neither victim nor driver of history — she’s curious, isolated, trying to live up to expectations while being true to herself, unaware the tragic fate that’s racing to meet her.
