A Civic Education Day of Action and Organizing to Honor Civil Rights Hero John Lewis
Tallahassee City Hall
Thursday, July 17, 2025
6:00 pm to 9:30 pm
Background: Power Lab 850, hosted by the Tallahassee African American Local Election Review Team (ALERT), is a dynamic, community-focused civic education and organizing series. Our inaugural event is designed to honor the legacy of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis on the anniversary of his death, nationally recognized as the John Lewis National Day of Action. Known for his fearless advocacy, commitment to voting rights, and lifelong fight for justice, Lewis urged us all to "make good trouble" to protect democracy. This event, and the broader series, carry forward his legacy by empowering local communities through education, civic engagement, and power building.
What to Expect on July 17: At Power Lab 850, participants will engage in an interactive workshop focused on political education that centers grassroots power building in Tallahassee and community-centered dialogue about the systems that shape our lives.
We’ll break down how Tallahassee City Hall operates, who holds power, and how we, students, elders, workers, and neighbors, can shift the balance of power. This is about turning spectators into strategists.
