Here it is everyone, the official opener for the Syracuse Herbal Study Group 2025 plant walk season :)
While the first walk is exciting every year, this season we've got some extras we are adding in that makes it all the more wondrous. First, I'm proud and grateful to announce that June's walk will be co-led, a collaboration between myself (Lauren) and my good friend Hazel Powless. Hazel is a leader in her community at the Onondaga Nation, an herbalist, naturalist and activist. She will be providing us not just with input on medicinal uses of the plants, but on the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of the Rand Tract in Syracuse, where we will be meeting for this month's walk.
The Rand Tract is a wooded park in the city of Syracuse, with historical ties to the Onondaga Nation and a large variety of native plants and medicinals for us to discover, discuss and experience. Please join us as we spend time in their sphere, learn from them and each other, and experience our city in a new way. We will be meeting at the entrance to the Rand Tract part at 4pm (late this month to accommodate the CNY Pride Parade at 11am the same day).
Secondly, Syracuse Herbal Study Group has new community collab to announce! We are psyched that our friends at the CNY Lyme & Tick-Borne Disease Alliance will be setting up an educational booth at the walk this month, and sharing info about Lyme prevention, tick testing services and community support. We are hoping to make this a yearly partnership, since most of us know that tick-borne illnesses are only growing in our area and that we woods-walkers are a highly susceptible bunch. To find out more about the Alliance and their work, visit them here:

Lastly, a few changes to our ticketing structure for plant walks: as many of you know, in the past plant walks have been free of charge to the community, however, as we change our group mission to take on mutual aid initiatives, we are shifting the "suggested ticket cost" for both walks and for classes. Starting June 2025, plant walks will come with a suggested ticket cost of $15 and classes will come with a suggested cost of $20. Please keep in mind that this does NOT affect the sliding scale options, they will still be available, this is only a change to the suggested cost option. Thank you for helping us help our neighbors by attending all of our educational offerings!
