Gouache Resist uses water-soluble gouache as a mask to create a design that's then covered with India ink. The gouache is washed off, leaving a high-contrast graphic image that looks similar to a woodblock print. Then watercolors are used to enliven and highlight.
We are going to explore this fun and easy technique that offers versatility and interesting, unique results. We will be able to work on and complete a few small paintings. I will send some line art suggestions as we get closer to the class that will give you some ideas.
Materials Needed:
140 lb watercolor paper. (Does not need to be expensive paper. CansonXL watercolor paper works well). We will be doing 2 or 3 small paintings, 5” x 7” or smaller, so a 9” x 12” cut in half would work great.)
Gouache paint. (Inexpensive paint will work. Michael’s Artist Loft or Artiza works well. A large tube of white gouache works (mixed with watercolor to tint.) Just make sure it’s water soluble gouache, NOT acrylic gouache.
standard pencil/soft eraser
Waterproof India ink (must be waterproof)
Fine line waterproof ink pen for touch ups (like Pigma Micron, Staedtler, Uniball)
Watercolors (any that you have on hand — what you normally use)
Palette or mixing dish
Container for water
Synthetic brushes — variety of rounds and flats plus a detail brush - 0 or 00. Brushes you have on hand will be sufficient.
An inexpensive 1 or 2 inch soft flat brush for India ink.
Small plastic clipboard ~9” x 12” (if you have one)
Hair dryer (if possible). I will bring one
Roll of Paper towels
Plastic table cover to protect your surface.
Key steps for gouache resist
—Draw your design in pencil on 140 lb watercolor paper.
—Paint your design with gouache on paper, leaving your pencil lines exposed. Let it dry thoroughly.
—Apply a layer of waterproof ink over the entire surface. Let it dry thoroughly.
—Gently wash off the gouache. Only the ink remains where the gouache was not applied—creating a negative area where the gouache resist was and a positive graphic with the ink.
Even though you use waterproof ink, it can still wash away from the paper if you hold it under the water or scrub too long. Be careful not to remove too much of the ink. Part of the charm of this technique is the ragged look it produces. Some places in the resist might still show a bit of ink, and some without the resist might have some ink lifted. Stop when you like what you see. Don’t
scrub off too much or not enough.
