Wilderness First Aid is the prefect entry level course for outdoor enthusiasts. Students will be able to recognize medical emergencies and will become familiar with basic lifesaving skills, patient assessment, and basic field care of common injuries. This course is taught mostly outside through hands-on simulations in all weather. No prior medical training or experience is necessary. Successful completion of the Wilderness First Aid class will result in a certification good for 3 years. The class will run Saturday, July 12 to Sunday, July 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. There are no overnight accomodations provided.
In order to participate in the WFA class:
You must have the ability to assist in lifting, carrying, and balancing a person weighing up to 300 pounds (136 kilograms). You must possess the dexterity necessary to perform all tasks related to the highest quality patient care. You must have the ability to access another person on uneven terrain, to work in confined spaces, and to work in extreme environmental conditions.
You must have the ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high stress situations.
In order to successfully achieve a Wilderness First Aid Certification, you must successfully complete a written exam and practical assessments conducted by instructors.
Where to Meet: Middle Creek Visitors Center
What to Expect: Open to ages 18+. Restrooms available onsite. This class will run rain or shine.
What to Bring: A packed lunch and any other snacks you may need throughout the day, along with bottled water. Most of the class will be held outdoors, so dress for the weather in comfortable clothing.
Your Presenter
Keith Williams is Vice President of Engagement and Education at Lancaster Conservancy. He is a nationally registered paramedic, Wilderness EMT, swift water rescue technician and wildlands firefighter with 30 years of EMS and backcountry medicine experience. He earned his MS in Ecological Teaching and Learning with 30 years of back country trip leading experience. He is a former adjunct faculty for the Cecil College Paramedic Program.
