Located in Missouri’s second asylum, the Glore Psychiatric Museum in St. Joseph is a formidable foe for even the most hardened paranormal investigator.
The asylum opened in 1874 and used barbaric psychiatric treatments, causing many patients to become insane. Many died in the asylum, their tortured souls forever trapped within its walls.
The museum is scarred by the tragic, misguided treatments and deaths of its mental patients, and it also served as a facility for tuberculosis patients.
In the 1960s, George Glore, a long-time employee of the Missouri Department of Mental Health, began collecting macabre items from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, depicting the evolution of mental illness treatments. This led to the hospital’s growing reputation for being haunted.
Staff began reporting sightings of apparitions and shadow figures in the hospital, often feeling watched from empty rooms. Patients also reported similar experiences. One patient, known for communicating with the spirits of the building, created drawings, poems, and songs detailing her paranormal encounters.
Disembodied voices, including screams, singing, and whispering, are common. Male voices have been heard shouting “GET OUT!” while female voices have been known to call out for staff and visitors. Visit the morgue at your own risk. You may encounter a male apparition near the elevator doors there.
Recognized as one of the 50 most unusual museums in the country, the museum is also one of the most haunted buildings in the state of MO.
