We are recruiting teachers for Friends of the St. Clair River's 2025 Teacher Summer Institute! This will take place June 23 - 25 and Aug 12 in St. Clair, MI. The program application will open in April! Only 14 spots available!
This 4-day teacher professional development series is for St. Clair County 4th and 5th grade teachers. You do not need to be a science teacher! This can be worked into math, social studies, or ELA.
This includes 28 hours of State Continuing Educator Clock Hours (SCECHs) approved by the Michigan Department of Education and and a $100/day stipend. Training in the course includes watershed and environmental concepts, place-based education and environmental education pedagogy, and time for curriculum development.
Friends of the St. Clair River's Teacher Summer Institute includes opportunities for teachers to collaborate and build relationships that support the watershed pen pal cohort model. Teachers will be introduced to resources and community partners, given considerable time to reflect on their outdoor field experiences, and to begin development of their own Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences (MWEE) Plans detailing how they will build MWEEs into their teaching cycle throughout the year, and how the activities will connect to content standards.
Every teacher will receive a Watershed Pen Pal Packs - a take-home resource backpack designed to help facilitate MWEEs in the classroom.
By the end of the Summer Institute, teachers will be able to identify their local watershed, its unique landscape and current issues, identify an entry point to launch their own MWEE’s, have established a relationship with their watershed pen pal, and understand how their Pen Pal Pack contributes to a successful MWEE.
