Author bio:
Dustie M. Clements is a local author, poet, and copy editor who is dedicated to raising awareness to many topics, often depicted through her work. Despite being born in Colorado, she was raised entirely in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She received her major in Mass Communications, minor in English, and a Photography Certificate from Black Hills State University. While collecting many hobbies, writing has always been her number one passion. Dustie's poetry is often turned toward sadness, as she finds writing to be a way to cope with her personal mental health struggles and physical disabilities. Despite living with such heavy burdens, she uses her experiences and education to fight inequity and societal wrongs. Her fight for equality is often the catalyst to objectively uncomfortable poems with poignant meanings, often with an undertone that inspires understanding and a call to action. Dustie is a multifaceted writer with works expressing happiness, anger, sadness, and comedy. Despite her niche in writings that bring a tear to the eye, her works also include those that are lighter and easier for readers to digest. In a recent example, inspired by a prompt from her favorite college professor, her children's book is now available called "South Dakota Night Sky." This interactive children’s book has attributes of rhyming, education, and locally sourced photographs, teaching children of all ages about astronomy in the beautiful Black Hills. “South Dakota Night Sky” is now available in print, to purchase in a variety of stores such as Henry's Books in Spearfish, though she always carries several with her to sell and sign in person for an extra special touch.
