This June 6, the Blue Ridge Fiber Fest will be offering two classes rooted in sashiko stitching. Sashiko is a traditional form of Japanese embroidery wherein a single strand of white thread is worked in geometric patterns on a dark background. The repetitive designs in white thread on indigo cloth are dramatic. Modern artisans, however, use a wider range of colored thread on different colors and types of cloth than the traditional white on blue cotton.
Sashiko was originally a means of mending. Worn garments were reinforced with embroidered patterns to give them enhanced life. It was inevitable, though, that this form of embroidery would become an art form in its own right.
In her class, Introduction to Sashiko, Gail Clement, a master at embroidery, introduces the basics of sashiko. This class provides an opportunity for beginners and experienced embroiderers to delve into this ancient art form.
Gail’s other class, Transferring Stitch Patterns, is geared to artisans who have some embroidery skills and want to go beyond using a purchased design. Suppose that you see a pattern or picture that you like. How would you transfer that pattern to your own cloth? How might you modify that pattern? What are the legal ramifications if you copy someone else’s design? These are issues that will be discussed in this class.
While sashiko is the main focus of Gail’s teaching, Transferring Stitch Patterns will be a useful class for people who do other embroidery techniques. Whatever your embroidery interest, the techniques that you learn in this class will be important to applying stitched designs to a multitude of projects: garments, accessories, home goods, and more.
