Gene's Camera is excited to welcome tintype expert D. Anson Brody to present two hands-on tintype classes. All you need is you! Each class will be a day of shooting and learning. Attendees will leave with a couple tintypes they made in the class. All materials and safety gear with be provided. Due to the nature of the process, class size will be limited to four people each. Secure your slot for Friday, June 27 or Saturday, June 28. Lunch is on your own. Plan on 60-75 minutes.

Meet Antiquarian Photographer D. Anson Brody
Born in South Bend, Indiana, D. Anson Brody was classically trained as an upright bassist before moving to Texas in his 20s to pursue music full-time. There, friendships with songwriters, authors, and poets inspired his own songwriting on baritone guitar, leading to recording and touring his music.
In 2017, with the release of the first Dall-E model, D. Anson sensed a creative shift. The rise of AI sparked an existential pull toward art that was more handmade, more bespoke, more flawed, more human. After years of experimenting with different mediums, he landed on wet plate collodion photography.
"The handmade aspects I was seeking is in all analog photography, but there's a socially unique aspect unique to tintypes and ambrotypes," says D. Anson. "There's a whole experience involved between the people and communities being photographed that's shared in the open vs alone in the darkroom. Add to that, the fact that each plate image is unique, a true 1 of 1 and it all comes together."
Today, D. Anson balances traveling tintype pop-ups, artist collaborations, work at a non-profit theater, and teaching, while creating ultra-large format 16x20 wet plate pieces exploring AI, performance, persona, and myth. He also continues to write and perform music in Chicago.
