About the event

What to the Slave is the Fourth of July
The Somerville Museum and the Department of Racial and Social Justice will be kicking off the Juneteenth Celebration.

About this Event

In collaboration with the Somerville Museum and the Department of Racial and Social Justice, the evening will begin with a public reading of Frederick Douglass’s historic speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

Please join us for our annual public Reading of Frederick Douglass with our event scholar and musician John Hughes. Stay for a conversation afterwards.


5:30–6:30 PM at the corner of Cedar and Broadway


You may sign up as a reader when you arrive or register with your ticket.
