About the event

Monarch Monday's
For a 2nd year in a row, The Pine Hollow Arboretum (PHA) is excited to introduce our Monarch Monday's program to the Capital Region! This FREE program has something for all ages, as PHA staff educates the public about this endangered butterfly. Explore the world of Monarchs (& other butterflies and insects), their life cycle, role they play in our ecosystem, migratory patterns and importance of gardening for pollinators! Talk with experts and educators in the field of lepidoptery, horticulture and arboriculture.

We ask that you please register, but it is not required. Parking is limited, so please consider carpooling.

Jerry Dievendorf:
Jerry's is an Entomologist, who has traveled around the equator to tropical rainforests to study insects, especially moths. He is President of FRASS, a tax exempt organization approved to operate an insect museum and a live butterfly exhibit in the Capital District. I. He serves as the Science Chairman and Entomology instructor for Heldeberg Workshop in Voorheesville which operates a summer day camp for children.

Maraleen Mantos- Jones: Presentation about Monarchs inside the Arboretum house (this presentation is great for 8+ years old)

Maraleen is an award winning environmental activist, author, educator, artist, and master gardener brings a special perspective to the world of butterflies. She was the 1 st woman from the U.S. to discover the monarchs' overwintering habitats in 1977 after a two month search and has been returning yearly to Mexico since then working to protect butterfly habitats by facilitating the planting of over six million trees, and working with the mountain women to develop and distribute their pine needle crafts. She is an educator who has lectured extensively in museums, libraries, schools, and universities, including Harvard and Yale, the Royal Botanical Gardens, and Huntington Gardens among many other places. She’s the recipient of the 2022 Pollinator Advocate Award from the National Pollinator Partnership, among other awards. She is the author of the sold out book The Spirit of Butterflies: Myth, Magic, and Art, published by Harry Abrams. She has been featured in numerous documentaries about saving monarchs and all pollinators. She was instrumental in getting the DEP to stop spraying glyphosate around the reservoirs and along 99 miles of roads in 2016. She led the effort to get the Scenic Byway, Rte 28, to protect pollinators along its 52 mile corridor in 2019. She has created public, private, and school butterfly gardens.

Depending on weather and life cycle stage, there may be monarch butterflies to be tagged & released during these sessions, but it is not guaranteed.

The Pine Hollow Arboretum is a non-profit (EIN: 26-1815321) and provides hands-on environmental education opportunities for all ages. We invite the public to explore the arboretum for FREE, 365 days a year. Your donation helps us keep going so we can do programs for free, just like this!
