Самостојна изложба на Ибрахим Махама во Музејот на современата уметност - Скопје
Специјално отворање на проектот со можноста публиката да се сретне со уметникот ќе се одржи на 14 октомври, 2025 година со почеток во 18 часот.

Делото на Махама, кое ја обвиткува фасадата на Музејот на современата уметност, претставува прва негова самостојна изложба во земјава.
Текстилната површина, составена од над 1.000 јутени вреќи кои ја обвиткуваат зградата, се секојдневно користени за транспорт на стоки и производи, првенствено во економиите на глобалниот југ, носејќи ги на себе историските траги од процесите на трудот, размената, реферирајќи на теми како глобализацијата и миграцијата, експлоатацијата и економската нееднаквост. Преку поврзување на јутените вреќи и нивното инсталирање на површината на зградата на музејот, делото истражува како историските настани се вградени во материјалноста на јутените вреќи и како преку оваа инсталација фасадата се преобразува во политичко огледало.
Основан во 1964 година, МСУ – Скопје е создаден како платформа за уметничка размена, културна и меѓународна соработка. Изграден од донации после катастрофалниот скопски земјотрес во 1963 година, претставува материјално здание на принципот на солидарност, место кое го одразува ветувањето за подобро општество.
Интервенцијата на Махама го обновува основачкиот етос на музејот, потврдувајќи ја улогата на уметноста во општеството и нејзиниот потенцијал да претставува и одразува акти на солидарност без оглед на различните просторни и историски контексти и ситуации. Зградата на музејот нераскинливо се поврзува со инсталацијата и јутените вреќи на Махама, станувајќи пандан во изразувањето и повторно промислувајќи ја и воспоставувајќи ја солидарноста, спротивно на доминантните глобални односи на моќ и експлоататорската геополитичка динамика.
За уметникот
Ибрахим Махама е роден во 1987 година во Тамале, Гана. Тој живее и работи во Акра, Кумаси и Тамале. Избрани самостојни изложби вклучуваат Барбикан центарот, Лондон (2024); Кунстхале Оснабрик, Германија (2023); Ауде Керк, Амстердам (2022); Фрак Пејс де ла Лоар (2022); Хај Лајн, Њујорк (2021); Музеј на уметноста на Универзитетот во Мичиген (2020); итн. Надвор од својата уметничка практика, Махама активно се стреми да ја редефинира улогата на уметноста во општеството. Тој ги основа Центарот за современа уметност „Савана“ и Студиото „Црвена глина“, обете институции посветени на образование, експериментирање и уметничка пракса водена од заедницата во северна Гана. Во 2023 година, Махама беше назначен и за уметнички директор на 35-тото Љубљанско биенале за графички уметности, Љубљана.

Solo exhibition by Ibrahim Mahama at Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje
Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama will present a large-scale, site-specific public installation on the facades of the iconic museum of solidarity: Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje.

A special preview of the public art work will be held on the 14th of October at 18:00, offering the public an opportunity to meet the renowned artist Ibrahim Mahama.
Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje presents a major solo exhibition by world renowned artist Ibrahim Mahama, during October and November 2025. Mahama’s work, which encompasses the entirety of the main volume of the Museum building’s modernist facade, spanning more than 1100 m2, will present the Ghanaian artist’s first exhibition in the country. The textile surface, comprised of over 1000 jute bags that wrap the building as a double skin, are used daily for the transport of goods, primarily in the economies of the Global South, bearing traces and histories of labor and exchange, referencing themes such as globalisation and migration, exploitation and economic inequalities. By stitching the jute sacks together and installing them over the architectural volume of the museum building, the work examines how personal narratives are embedded in matter, and how architecture can function as a political mirror.
Founded in 1964, MoCA – Skopje was established as a platform for artistic exchange, cultural collaboration and international support. Built from donations following the catastrophic earthquake in 1963 in Skopje, it stands as a lasting testament to the principle of solidarity, as a venue for reflecting the promise of a better society.
Mahama’s intervention renews the founding ethos of the Museum, affirming art’s role in society and its potential to reflect acts of human compassion in various spatial and historical contexts. The Museum’s building, the ideal of solidarity interwoven within it, and the installation that embraces its physicality become equal counterparts in voicing and thereby also confronting the various forms of exploitation and inequality that persist to this day worldwide. Thus, the work of Mahama, has the potential to establish brotherly connections of solidarity, in opposition to the dominant global power relationships and oppressive geo-political dynamics.

Ibrahim Mahama was born in 1987 in Tamale, Ghana. He lives and works in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale. Beyond his artistic practice, Mahama actively strives to redefine the role of art in society. He founded the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art and Red Clay Studio, both institutions dedicated to education, experimentation, and community-led art practice in northern Ghana. In 2023, Mahama was also appointed Artistic Director of the 35th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana.
About the museum
The Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje was founded in 1964, after the devastating Skopje earthquake of 1963. A key moment in the museum’s early history came when the International Association of Plastic Arts, meeting in New York, appealed to artists worldwide to donate works in support of the city’s reconstruction; these gifts formed the nucleus of MoCA-Skopje’s collection, which now holds more than 5,300 works of art from around the world. Solidarity remains the institution’s core principle, making MoCA – Skopje a unique Museum dedicated to that very ideal. As North Macedonia’s principal public institution for modern and contemporary art, the museum has also published 39 issues of its journal “The Large Glass”, and organised 15 editions of The Biennale of Young Artists, since 1987, evidence of a sustained programme of exhibitions, performances, screenings, public programmes, publications, and educational initiatives that contribute to MoCA – Skopje’s reputation as a unique and internationally recognised cultural landmark. Ibrahim Mahama’s project is the inaugural artwork of the Museum’s new initiative entitled Redefining Fields, a recurring program that will take place every two years in the public space around the Museum
