The Ambuscade Experience
At the helm of Ambuscade, jazz vocalist and bandleader Iva Jean Ambush brings together a remarkable ensemble of seasoned artists whose careers, like hers, are rooted in the traditions of jazz, soul, and blues while pushing the music forward with originality and fire. Each member of this ensemble shares a deep commitment to storytelling, improvisation, and community engagement—values that mirror Iva’s own journey as a bandleader and visionary. Together, they craft performances that are emotionally resonant, rhythmically powerful, and historically rich. Whether gracing festival stages or intimate concert settings, Ambuscade delivers a show that is both timeless and fresh—uniting generations of music lovers through the legacy and future of American Classical Music.
Iva Jean Ambush – Vocalist, Bandleader
Hailing from Frederick, Maryland, Iva Jean Ambush is a scat-singing jazz vocalist whose voice channels the power of women in jazz. A recipient of the prestigious Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, she has performed at iconic venues including Birdland, the DC Jazz Festival, and the Kennedy Center. Iva’s musical lineage includes legendary relatives such as trumpeter Lester Bowie and bassist Scott Ambush, and her artistry has been shaped by collaborations with Sheila Jordan and Dr. Horace Boyer. Her upcoming project, Mosaic Voices of Four Women, honors the legacies of Abbey Lincoln, Lena Horne, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Nina Simone. As the leader of Ambuscade, she sets the tone with her fierce commitment to the voice as an instrument and a vessel for liberation.
Freddie Dunn, Jr. – Trumpet
Trumpeter Freddie Dunn, Jr. is a seasoned performer and educator with roots in New Jersey and deep ties to the Baltimore-Washington jazz scene. A globetrotter with bands like Fertile Ground and Lafayette Gilchrist’s New Volcanoes, Freddie’s horn has been featured on albums acclaimed by Downbeat Magazine and heard on shows like The Wire. His sound is a blend of soul-jazz, hard bop, and improvisational fire, forged in both club dates and concert halls. A passionate advocate for jazz education and community engagement, he brings vision and bold brass energy to the Ambuscade ensemble.
David Cole – Guitar, Vocals
David Cole is a powerhouse guitarist and vocalist whose roots in Washington, D.C.’s soul and blues scene have carried him from the Howard Theatre to international festivals. With a deep appreciation for Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix, and Wes Montgomery, David brings both electrifying showmanship and seasoned musicality to the stage. He has performed with legends like Roberta Flack and Percy Sledge and is co-founder of Main Street Blues. A music educator and cultural historian, David’s performances with Ambuscade tap into the lineage of the blues as the bedrock of American music.
Pete Frassrand – Piano
Detroit-born pianist Pete Frassrand brings a lyrical, soulful touch to the keys, informed by years performing in D.C.'s vibrant jazz clubs and his work as a music educator. With performances at the Kennedy Center, DC Jazz Festival, and Smithsonian institutions, Pete’s playing honors tradition while weaving in contemporary textures. He has longstanding collaborations with artists like Charles Rahmat Woods and Iva Ambush, and is a vital contributor to the sound of Ambuscade, grounding the ensemble with harmonic depth and rhythmic clarity.
Walter Cosby – Bass
Walter Cosby is the groove engine of Ambuscade. A DMV native with roots in funk, soul, jazz, and go-go, his playing is both deeply rooted and endlessly versatile. He’s toured Europe with acid-jazz outfit Fishbelly Black, recorded with a variety of artists, and played with everyone from Miki Howard to The JoGo Project. Walter’s basslines are not just foundational—they’re narrative, driving each performance with a distinct voice that reflects the breadth of his musical life.
Greg Holloway – Drums
Drummer Greg Holloway is a rhythmic force whose career spans from Howard University to the U.S. Air Force Field Bands, and from Aretha Franklin to the Anchorage Symphony. With training at the Eastman School of Music and degrees in both music and psychology, Greg brings technical mastery and emotional intelligence to the drums. He has performed with luminaries like Jimmy Heath, Freda Payne, and Vanessa Rubin, and is known for his dynamic control and deeply musical approach. In Ambuscade, Greg anchors the rhythm section with elegance, fire, and finesse.
