About the event
Bounds of Abbeydale St John parish 1877 walk
A walk of about 5.5 miles closely following the boundary of Abbeydale St John's parish as created in 1877. Due to subsequent house and railway building a few diversions are necessary.
Construction of the railway through Bradway Tunnel down the Sheaf Valley into Sheffield began in 1865 and was completed in 1870. The population of the area we now know as S17 grew very quickly, initially centred on Dore and Bradway but 20-25 years later extending towards Totley with the building of Totley Tunnel and the Hope Valley line.
The new Abbeydale parish took in 90% of modern Bradway plus Totley up to Mickley Lane and the lower part of Dore up to the Limb Brook. 6 boundary stones were positioned, 4 are still visible.
The walk has hilly sections. Most is on paved footpaths but parts are on rough paths which may become muddy.
The walk showcases Ecclesall, Poynton and Ladies Spring Woods. Particpants will receive a short descriptive leaflet explaining the route and what is to be seen along the way. Most local residents, won't have walked all these paths.
Come and get a new perspective on Dore & Totley Ward.
