About this Event

Professor and poet Lan P. Duong visits the store to discuss her poetry and work as an editor for various anthologies. Her collection of poetry Nothing Follows published in 2023, draws from the genres of memoir and poetry. Written from a young refugee girl’s perspective, the center of this world is a military father, an absent mother, sisters who come and go, broken brothers, and friends she meets in San José. In marking the journey, Lan Duong recreates the portraits of the girl’s friends and family and maps out refugee girlhoods. Recently, she edited and contributed to The Cleaving: Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora. She is joined in conversation by UW professor Linh Thủy Nguyễn.

Lan Duong is Associate Professor in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Treacherous Subjects: Gender, Culture, and Trans-Vietnamese Feminism and coeditor of Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora: Troubling Borders in Literature and Art and more recently, The Cleaving: Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora. Her poetry has appeared in Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry and Prose, Bold Words: Asian American Writing to Span the Centuries and Tilting the Continent: Southeast Asian American Writing. Her debut collection of poetry, Nothing Follows, was published by Texas Tech UP in 2023.

Linh Thủy Nguyễn is associate professor in American Ethnic Studies and adjunct associate professor in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington. Her first book Displacing Kinship: The Intimacies of Intergenerational Trauma in Vietnamese American Cultural Production (2024) from Temple University Press received Honorable Mention for the 2024 Gloria E. Anzaldúa Book Prize for groundbreaking monographs in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies from the National Women’s Studies Association. Displacing Kinship explores the interpersonal and structural relationships between history, memory, race, war, migration, and family in second generation Vietnamese American cultural production.
