About the event

Klezmer Starts Here: A Benefit for the Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice
Founded in 2017, the Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice NW (JCIJ) builds a Jewish voice in the Pacific Northwest advancing immigrant justice and domestic policy, following the leadership of impacted immigrant communities.

The Jewish Coalition is the leading organization in King and Pierce Counties training and dispatching volunteers to accompany immigrants to high stakes immigration appointments and hearings. JCIJ is helping to grow accompaniment programs across the country, activating allies to show up for immigrant communities. JCIJ advocates at the local, state and federal level fighting for social safety nets and deportation defense. JCIJ engages Jewish and multifaith communities to get involved and take action for immigrant justice.

Kesselgarden Klezmer Duo is Carl Shutoff (clarinet) and Laurie Andres (accordion), who have been playing together for over 20 years. “Kesselgarden” is how Yiddish-speaking Jews pronounced “Castle Garden,” a facility on the southern tip of Manhattan where Jewish immigrants entered this country prior to the opening of Ellis Island in 1892. Among first- and second-generation Jews, the term “Kesselgarden” was generalized to mean any situation that was noisy, confusing, or chaotic. Kesselgarden is a traditional band, playing Eastern European instrumental Jewish music of the 19th and 20th centuries, with original, sweet, and joyful arrangements which are neither noisy nor confusing.

The Talne Trio is a new ensemble playing a repertoire ranging from 19th century classically influenced Eastern European klezmer to the hard-driving American klezmer of the 20th century,to originals that draw on the complete history of the music. Kim Goldov (violin) began playing with Freylakh Klezmer Band in 1987. Freylakh included at different times both Laurie Andres and Carl Shutoff, who now make up Kesselgarden. Kim was a member of the Bucharest Drinking Team, Malke and the Boychiks, Lox Stork & Bugle, and SeaMuse.

Mark Lutwak (piano and accordion) leads the Klein Party, plays with The Luz Bones and The Casalini Trio, He has recorded and performed with The Julia Francis Band, Kupa`aina, The Happy New Yorkers, and the Paul McMahon Band. Aaron Harmonson (bass) has worked with Christina Crowder, Sierra Ferrell, Robert Sarazin Blake, Louis Ledford, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), John Convertino (Calexico, Neko Case), Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam), Levon Henry (Allen Tousaint, Michelle Ndegeocello), Lori Goldston, Medearis Dixon (Kendrick Lamar), Ari Joshua, Petunia and the Vipers, Jimmy James (True Loves), Country Dave and the Pickin’ Crew, Eric McConnell (Loretta Lynn, Jack White), Randy Weeks, Von Wildenhaus, and Evening Bell.
